History of PHELPS HEALTH

Our hospital was founded on philanthropy.

pcrmc02_600x400In 1947, a group of community-minded citizens recognized the need for quality healthcare close to home. What began as a grassroots effort to better the community quickly changed into a transformational journey to raise funds for the construction of a much-needed local medical facility. Through philanthropic support from community businesses and area residents and due in large part to a generous donation of land from the Rolla Lions Club, Phelps Health opened its doors on March 12, 1951 with 63 beds, 65 employees and 21 medical staff.

Phelps Health was a symbol of pride for the community. Upon opening, the Rolla Daily News reported, “Its [Phelps Health] completion represents a long-cherished hope of many hundreds of persons of the county. It stands today as a tribute to hard work and sacrifice on the part of persons with enough civic pride and enough interest in health and welfare for themselves and their fellows to work and fight for such a facility.”pcrmc75_600x400

Today, after several expansions and renovation projects, the hospital is now known as Phelps Health. The hospital boasts a capacity of 242 beds, employs a staff of more than 1,700, offers services from over 130 providers in more than 30 areas of specialty. Phelps Health has grown from a small, country hospital to the world-class facility it is today. But one thing has never changed –we are still dedicated to improving the health and wellness of people in our region.
